A small fund with a clear purpose.
The Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF) is a grant program administered by the Community Development Corporation of Sault Ste. Marie & Area (CDC). It provides small-scale, flexible funding to community organizations whose projects support local economic growth — from sector marketing campaigns and strategic planning to workforce development events and entrepreneurship initiatives for youth, newcomers, and other priority groups.
What the CEDF is built to do.
The fund supports community projects and initiatives that promote economic development in Sault Ste. Marie and Area. Its three objectives are:
- - Support projects and initiatives that contribute to local economic growth.
- - Raise awareness of the CDC and its services across the region.
- - Build new partnerships, or strengthen existing ones, between community economic-development organizations.

The CEDF is open to non-profit organizations engaged in community economic and business development within the CDC's service region. Eligible applicants include:
For-profit businesses are not eligible to apply directly. Businesses seeking financing should explore the CDC's Business Loan programs.
What the fund will — and won't — support.
Grants of up to $2,500 are available for projects that encourage economic development. The fund is intentionally flexible; what matters is a clear economic-development outcome.
Funded project types
- Community or industry-sector marketing initiatives
- Special event costs (with economic impact)
- Business-development conferences
- Strategic planning for non-profits
- Labour-force development projects and events
- Entrepreneurship programming — youth, newcomers, Indigenous entrepreneurs, women, and other strategic groups
- Other initiatives with a clear economic-development outcome
Not funded
- Normal ongoing operational activities (regular overhead, payroll, rent, utilities)
- For-profit activities or projects whose primary purpose is private gain

Attach Supporting Documents
Non-profits, municipalities, and First Nations must include a recent financial statement and a formal resolution from the board, council, or band council requesting CEDF support. Quotations or estimates from suppliers and letters of partner support should also be attached where relevant.
Submit Your Application
Submit by email to cdc@ssmcdc.com or deliver it in person to the CDC office at 672 Queen Street East, Sault Ste. Marie. Keep a copy for your records.
Review and Contribution Agreement
Applications are reviewed on a continuous basis by the Executive Director. If approved, the CDC prepares a CED Contribution Agreement outlining the terms and conditions of the grant.
Deliver and Report
After the project is complete, submit a short final report describing outcomes — attendance figures, publications produced, leveraged dollars, partnerships formed, studies completed, and any other results that demonstrate impact.
Acknowledging the partnership.
Successful applicants are asked to provide the CDC with public profile and acknowledgment for its support. This typically includes:
- Inclusion of the CDC logo on printed and digital materials.
- Mention in press releases or at press conferences.
- Other communications opportunities, shaped to fit each project and discussed with CDC staff.
Common questions.
How much can a single project receive?
The maximum is normally $2,500 per project. Larger requests can be considered on an exceptional basis if pre-approved.
Is there a deadline?
No. The CEDF operates on continuous intake — applications are accepted and reviewed throughout the year until annual funds are committed.
Can a for-profit business apply?
No. The CEDF is restricted to non-profit organizations, First Nations, municipalities and Chambers of Commerce. Businesses seeking financing should look at the CDC's Business Loan programs.
Can the CEDF cover our regular operating costs?
No. Routine operational expenses such as ongoing payroll, rent, or utilities are not eligible. The fund is for project-based work with a clear economic-development outcome.
Do we have to match the CDC's contribution?
Matching is not strictly required, but leveraged funding is a strong evaluation criterion. Applications that bring partners and other funders to the table are more competitive.
How long does it take to get a decision?
Decisions are made by the Executive Director on a rolling basis. Timelines depend on the complexity of the proposal and the completeness of the application. Reach out to CDC staff for a current estimate before you submit.
What happens after our project is funded?
You'll sign a CED Contribution Agreement, deliver the project, recognize the CDC publicly per the agreement, and submit a short final report on outcomes.
