Karalash Corners

General Information

  • Location - Highway 17 North
  • Access - Land

Overview

Karalash Corners, located approximately 32 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie, is a small community found in the northeast corner of Fenwick Township and east of Highway 17. Here residents enjoy the scenic beauty of King Mountain, the inland lakes and fast flowing creeks draining the upland areas. Two recreational complexes are located in the community, i.e., Stokely Creek Lodge/Cross-Country Ski Touring Centre and Buttermilk Alpine Ski Village, both of which take advantage of the rugged upland terrain. The Algoma Highlands Conservancy, based here, has acquired lands to protect the dramatic Robertson Cliffs, habitat of the Peregrine Falcon. Snowmobile access to the area is provided by the north trail connecting Heyden and Searchmont.

The Karalash area has been proposed as the location of a recreational development complex based upon the potential for alpine skiing utilizing the over 305 metre (1000 foot) vertical drop associated with the north facing slopes of King Mountain.
