Overview

Heyden is located at the intersection of Highways 17 and 556. Here are highway commercial and accommodation businesses. Additional businesses provide specialized services including restaurants, variety retail and recreational adventure products. The Heyden and Aweres Township settlement area is the most populated settlement area found within the Sault Ste. Marie North Planning Area and accounts for approximately 35% of the total population found within the Planning Area. Residential development is comprised of mobile home parks and a mix of permanent and seasonal shoreline dwellings. Many of the latter have been converted to permanent establishments where access and other services permit. Settlement is focused on Heyden and the shorelines of Heyden Lake, Lower Island Lake, Upper Island Lake and Trout Lake. Many of the residents commute to Sault Ste. Marie for employment and educational purposes.

Heyden is well-connected to the provincial snowmobile trail system with the four-corner hub providing access to Sault Ste. Marie, Havilland Bay, Searchmont and points north, Echo Bay and points east. Also found here is the Heyden Adventure Base Camp featuring mountain biking, hiking, canoe and kayak outfitting and in the winter, snowshoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing. Heyden is on the Sault Cycling Club’s road bike routes to Goulais and to Searchmont.
