Overview

The community centre of Goulais is found at the intersection of Highway 552 and Old Goulais Bay Road, but development, using connecting roads, occurs in favoured locations found in Fenwick, Kars and Ley Townships. Historic Goulais Mission (Goulais Bay Indian Reserve 15A) is also found within the area. Commercial retail development occurs along Highway 17 and at the community centre. Most residential development in the area is water oriented and includes both permanent and seasonal developments. Favoured locations include the lower Goulais River shores and the Batchawana Bay, Goulais Point, Sand Bay and Bluewater Bay shorelines. Fenwick Township is the most populated, with approximately 28% of the total population of the Sault Ste. Marie North Planning Area. Because of its relatively close proximity, many residents commute to Sault Ste. Marie for employment and educational reasons.
