Overview

Kirby’s Corner is situated in Vankoughnet Township and is part of the scenic Bellevue Valley of the Goulais River. Despite what the name might suggest, residents are widely spread within the valley, but the total population of the township is the third largest of the 31 townships found within the Sault Ste. Marie North Planning Area. Although there are exceptions, many of the residents who value their rural locations commute to the City of Sault Ste. Marie for employment or for educational reasons. Other residents use their lands for agricultural pursuits (beef and market gardening) as well as for recreational activities such as horse riding. Past mine development occurred within the Sill Lake area.

The North Snowmobile Trail, linking Heyden to Searchmont, crosses through the north part of the Township. Cyclists from the Sault Cycling Club use Highway 552 for their rides from the City to Goulais. In the fall, the leaves of the maples and oaks found along the valley sides provide spectacular scenic backdrops for photographers and for those just wanting to enjoy the colours.
